Liverpool and Chelsea Make Premier League History with Perfect Starts

Both Liverpool and Chelsea have continued their perfect starts to the Premier League season, with 5 wins each.

Liverpool beat Tottenham 2 – 1 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday to make it five wins from 5 Premier League games. Chelsea came from behind thanks to an Eden Hazard hattrick to beat Cardiff 4 – 1 at home for their fifth. Chelsea moved top of the table on goal difference thank to the big win.

Together, both these teams have made history. While a perfect start over 5 games has been done before, never has it been done by two teams at the same time.

Chelsea have won their 5 opening games four times in the Premier League. Liverpool have done it twice, although it was in the old First Division.

The last time two teams won their opening 5 games was in 1908 – 1909, one hundred and ten years ago. Prior to that it had happened in 1905 – 1906.

Watford had the chance to join Liverpool and Chelsea in this history, but they lost 2 – 1 to Manchester United. Before that, Watford had began their season perfectly, winning four from four games.

Liverpool have the chance to win a 6th straight league game next weekend against Southampton at Anfield. Chelsea face a london derby at the London stadium against West Ham.

The week after that, though, one of their streaks will be broken. Chelsea host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on the 29th of September, three days after meeting in the Carabao Cup.

Despite their perfect starts, it hasn’t been enough to knock Manchester City off the top of their title favourites perch.

After the weekend, Liverpool are 2 /1 to win the league with Paddy Power. Chelsea are behind them as third favourites with odds of 9 / 1.

Manchester City, who have won four and drawn one, are 8 / 11 favourites to retain their title.
