Can The Unstoppable Growth Of Football Be Called Progress?

Football is a global force that’s continually expanding, often swallowing up entire seasons and careers in its wake.

The economic progress of football is unstoppable and exponential, but are those in the industry having the best careers they could have? Are teams able to make the most effective decisions?

You would have to say a resounding no. Players and managers often find themselves boxed into a limited number of scenarios due to finance and status.

Look at the situation with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester. That project has reached its natural end, and the best thing for Rodgers and the club would be to part ways.

However, that hasn’t happened yet because if Leicester sack Rodgers they have to pay him off, and they have no money. 

Instead, they will hope the situation improves. If it doesn’t, Leicester will be forced to sack Rodgers when the season is unsalvageable. 

Similarly, french superstar Kylian Mbappe finds himself seemingly trapped at PSG. The striker has been threatening to move to Real Madrid for a few years now. Yet, he keeps signing lucrative contracts. 

At this point, Real Madrid are the only team insane enough to put together the financial package it would take to sign Mbappe. A young striker who’s always dreamed of playing for Los Blancos. It seems preordained, doesn’t it?

But what if Madrid isn’t the best place for Mbappe? What if there is another team who would be perfect for him who can’t afford him?

Look at the careers of Paul Pogba and Mesut Ozil. Two generational talents in midfield who were heralded as saviors of Manchester United and Arsenal. Ozil’s career fizzled out, while Pogba is still, inexplicably at Old Trafford, flattering to deceive as always.
