Champions League Elimination For Arsenal And Manchester City

It’s Bayern Munich VS Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund VS PSG in the Champions League semi finals following Wednesday’s action.

The first and second-placed teams in the Premier League were eliminated in narrow quarter final ties. Arsenal were found wanting away in Munich, while City lost on penalties at home to Madrid.

On Tuesday, PSG stunned Barcelona at the Camp Nou to win 4 – 1 on the night and 6 – 4 overall. Dortmund came from behind with a 4 – 2 win on the night to go through 5 – 4 on aggregate.

Barcelona’s habit of humbly losing home games in the Champions League knockout round resurfaced again. Last week they looked like a young, exciting team but their callowness showed on Tuesday. They took the lead on 12 minutes but were down to ten men by 30 and went on to lose 4-1.

Dortmund overcame the odds and punctured a Diego Simeone team who couldn’t find enough offensive resources to win the game. They’re undoubtedly the underdogs of the Champions League semi finals, but they’ll feel they have as good a chance as anyone.

On Wednesday, Real Madrid smuggled a win out of the Etihad Stadium despite being dominated. They took the lead on 12 minutes through Rodrigo and had to defend for their lives afterwards. City outshot them 33 – 8 and had 68% possession. However, it was only enough for one goal and they would go out on penalties.

In Munich, Arsenal gave a good account of themselves in the first half but faded in the second. Joshua Kimmich’s 63rd minute header was enough to separate the teams in a tight game. Arsenal weren’t embarrassed, but they didn’t show enough to turn the game in their favour.

Real Madrid and PSG will be looking towards the final and licking their lips. They should overcome Bayern and Dortmund respectively, which sets up the lovely possibility of Kylian Mbappe winning the cup against Real Madrid in his last game before joining them.
