Nottingham Forest Manager Steve Cooper Safe For Now

Nottingham Forest fans will be wondering what the plan for the team is in the wake of recent sackings.

Head of recruitment George Syrianos and head of scouting Andy Scott were fired by the club after a review of their summer transfer business.

Nottingham Forest signed 22 players after their surprise promotion from the Championship. That’s almost one player for each of the 23 years Nottingham Forest has been absent from the top flight.

Nottingham Forest fans were accustomed to ten or more signings arriving over the summer. However, even for a chaotic, transient club, it was seen as excessive.

The plan, whatever it was and however dedicated the hierarchy were to it, hasn’t worked. Forest find themselves second from bottom with five points in nine games.

Last week, it looked as if manager Steve Cooper’s job could be in danger. Forest is a notoriously trigger happy club – Cooper is their 18th manager in 16 years.

In fact if Cooper makes it until the end of the year, 2022 will be the first year Forest haven’t sacked a manager since 2010.

Cooper has a lot of credit in the bank because of last year’s playoff final win. Although, he is adjusting to the Premier League as much as the club is.

In the opening few games, he tried to play the same style that worked for them in the Championship. Their recent draw with Aston Villa saw them play more conservatively, and they may have to stick to that going forward.

Cooper signed a new deal until 2025, quashing the rumours that he would also be let go. He’s not safe yet, though. If results don’t improve, the Forest hierarchy could be tempted by a ‘new manager bounce’ to help them avoid relegation.
