Jurgen Klopp: ‘We Need To Reinvent Ourselves

It’s a time of transition in English football and despite the stability of Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool need to pivot quickly.

Manchester City are building a new team around Erling Haaland. Manchester United are embarking on a new era under Erik ten Hag. Chelsea have just become even more chaotic after sacking Thomas Tuchel.

Compared to all this, replacing Sadio Mane with Darwin Nunez didn’t appear to be such a complicated task. However injuries, fatigue and a possible hangover from last season’s disappointment appear to have followed Liverpool into this one.

Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to a losing start with a 4 – 1 defeat at Napoli on Wednesday.

Far from being able to rely on Europe to provide them with a boost, Liverpool’s problems were compounded in Naples. The Reds have now won just two of their seven games this season.

“We need to reinvent ourselves,” Jurgen Klopp said. “There are a lot of things lacking, not in all games but the fun thing is we have to do it in the middle of the Premier League season and a Champions League campaign. We need a set-up to be better in pretty much everything.”

“We have to play in three days against Wolves. If Wolves saw that game tonight they would not stop laughing and would say it is the perfect moment.”

Tiago, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are all in varying states of injury. Liverpool’s new attack can’t begin to flourish when the midfield behind them is in flux. It’s a matter of time before they get their players back. However, considering they compete with City, they may not have the luxury of time.
