Harry Maguire Set for Record Man UTD Transfer

Harry Maguire is set to become the most expensive defender in the world if Sunday reports are to be believed.

According to the Sun, Manchester United have agreed an €89 million deal with Leicester City for Harry Maguire.

The England international central defender would become Manchester United’s third signing of the summer.

Harry Maguire reportedly travels to Manchester to complete his medical on Monday. The move is the result of a year of courting and speculation following Maguire’s impressive world cup.

Maguire (26) has impressed for England and Leicester City and England since establishing himself in 2017. From 2014 – 2017, he played for Hull City.

He has also been a long term target for Manchester United. Former manager Jose Mourinho wanted to sign him before he was sacked. Maguire seemingly fits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s philosophy too, as a young English player.

This summer, Manchester United have already signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Daniel James from Swansea City.

United will reportedly pay £60 million to Leicester upfront, with the remaining £20 million in add ons.

As a result, the fee will surpass what Liverpool paid to take Virgil van Dijk away from Southampton. However, the two transfers are not quite so analogous to each other.

After what Liverpool have done, every team wants their own van Dijk. A totem who can come in and lead a secure Premier League defense by himself.

Maguire is in the same price range as van Dijk, although that is more because he is English than because he is brilliant.

It is a boon for Leicester, who had been holding out for exactly this kind of record transfer fee. They will now reinvest into an already rebuilding squad, and perhaps compete with UTD for a Champions League place.
