Graham Potter: Dortmund Win ‘Up There With Best Wins In My Career’

At times it’s too obvious to describe one good result for an under-pressure manager as a ‘turning point’. However for Chelsea manager Graham Potter it most certainly is.

Graham Potter described Chelsea’s 2 – 0 win over Dortmund as ‘up there with the best wins in my career.’

Following a rotten run in 2023, Chelsea won their second consecutive game for the first time this year. Goals from Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz saw them advance in the Champions League at the expense of in-form Dortmund.

“To win a game to go into the last eight of the Champions League you’d have to say it’s up there with wins and evenings in my career,” said Graham Potter.

“This evening the players and the supporters were tremendous – we had to be against a team that were doing so well, 10 games on the bounce winning. I think over the two legs we deserved to go through. We played a good game in Dortmund but we didn’t score, today we did.

“There is always going to be those types of questions and noise but my job is to prepare the team as best we could and support them because they’d been suffering. No one has enjoyed the run we’ve had.”

Dortmund will feel they were unlucky with injuries. They started with their second-choice goalkeeper and midfielder Julain Brandt had to go off injured. However, this was still a team in form. They traveled to London having won 10 games in a row and sit second in the Bundesliga.

A Champions League run could be just what Potter needs to salvage this season. Had they gone out on Tuesday, they would have had to play the remaining third of the season with nothing to play for.

Graham Potter, for now, is still alive.
