Erik ten Hag Blasts ‘Unprofessional’ Manchester United After Anfield Thrashing

Manchester United have been riding the crest of a wave in recent weeks. Marcus Rashford has been banging them in with Casemiro making it all tick. They’re third in the league. They knocked Barcelona out of the Europa League and won the Carabao Cup.

There have been whispers of ‘the start of something special’ at Manchester United. They should have known they were about to get slapped. Get slapped they did, to the tune of a 7-0 thrashing at Anfield.

After a relatively even first half, only Cody Gakpo’s goal separated the two teams at the start of the second half.

If United improve as it looks like they will under Erik ten Hag, they’ll start playing a higher line eventually. However, Sunday’s showing at Anfield shows they’re not ready for it yet.

Ten Hag was clearly frustrated at full time, lamenting their poor play and lack of professionalism. The 7-0 loss equals their biggest ever competitive defeat. Manchester United have lost by seven goals three times before – in 1926, 1930 and 1931.

“First two goals, two defensive transition moments. First was a turnover, second was a counter.

“We make such bad decisions, a matter of decisions on the ball. That was with the first one obviously but then how we anticipate, how we concede that goal is really annoying,” said ten Hag.

“Then the third was a counter, also so unprofessional about decisions, not following in, then running in, moving forward, giving the space away in the back end of midfield, not tracking back. And especially that one, not tracking back.”

For Liverpool, this could be a galvanizing result. After an awful season so far they find themselves 5th in the table with Champions League qualification well within their capabilities.
