Wayne Rooney Shows MLS What He’s All About

Wayne Rooney announced himself to the DC United fans in a 3 – 2 win over Orlando City on Monday.

Playing his 6th game for the club, he set up a last minute winner for Luciano Acosta in incredible fashion.

The game was tied at 2-2 in the 96th minute. DC sent their Danish keeper David Ousted up for a corner in an attempt to score a last minute winner. Orlando cleared the ball and for a second it looked like DC were in big trouble.

With the ball rolling towards an open DC United goal and an Orlando player in chase, Wayne Rooney stepped in.

The 32-year old raced back into his own half, won the ball, and drove back towards the Orlando goal.

He then lofted a beautiful ball to the far post. There it was met by Luciano Acosta to score his hat trick goal, and the winner.

It was an incredible show of endeavour by Rooney, who clearly isn’t taking it easy just because it’s the MLS.

In that moment, he showed American fans why he was loved in Manchester United and hated everywhere else.

Manchester UTD fans adored him for the sheer amount of hard work he put in. Opponents hated playing against him because not only would he score against you, he would also charge back to the right back spot and make goal-saving tackles.

Wayne Rooney moved to DC United this summer after a romantic move back to Everton which didn’t work out. His move to the MLS is typical for aging stars who want to play in a less physically demanding league. The money they can make might also play a part.

His assist on Monday brings his total output for the Washington team to one goal and three assists.
