Mesut Ozil Inspires Arsenal to Win over Leicester

Mesut Ozil captained Arsenal to a tenth consecutive victory and a 3 – 1 win against Leicester on Monday night.

Mesut Ozil controversially resigned from the German national team over the summer. Given that, and his stuttering to start the club season, there were more doubts over him than ever.

However, playing in his preferred No. 10 position, Mesut Ozil proved that he can play in an Unai Emery system.

He sparked a struggling Arsenal into life with the equalizer just before halftime, and finished with a goal and an assist.

Leicester were by far the better team in the first half. They put Arsenal under pressure from the first whistle, and should have had a penalty before their first goal.

Replays showed Rob Holding handle the ball as he competed for an aerial ball in the Arsenal box. His hands were clearly raised and they made contact with the ball, leaving the Leicester players and manager incensed.

However, Leicester got the goal they deserved. Ben Chilwell broke into the box on the left, exposing Arsenal’s flank. Chilwell’s cross deflected off Bellerin and past a stranded Bernd Leno to open the scoring on the 31st minute.

Conceding the goal spark Arsenal into life, and they pressed for an equaliser. It came when Ozil broke through the center. He passed the ball to Hector Bellerin and continued his run into the box.

Bellerin pulled the ball back and Ozil nonchalantly side footed the ball into the post and over the line. It was an incredibly composed finish on a chance that was much harder than it looked.

In the second half, Arsenal were on top. It seemed inevitable that they would score and after a double substitution, they took the lead.

Unai Emery brought on Matteo Guendouzi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and it was the Gabonese striker who scored. Ozil played an inch perfect pass to Bellerin who pulled it back for Aubameyang to finish at the far post.

Three minutes later, Arsenal made the game safe with a beautiful goal. Bellerin drove down the right, and played the ball to Ozil on the edge of the box.

Ozil dummied and continued his run into the box. Alexandre Lacazette played Ozil behind the Leicester defence, and the German flicked it perfectly over the keeper to set up Aubameyang.

Aubameyang finished the move by scoring into an empty net and from there, Leicester weren’t going to come back.

The game finished 3 – 1, and Arsenal picked up where they left off before the international break. They face Sporting Lisbon in Lisbon on Thursday before going away to Crystal Palace next weekend.
