Tottenham Hotspur The Punchline Once Again After Mourinho Sacking

With all the outrage and furore that took place last week, the football world forgot to laugh at Tottenham Hotspur.

Amidst all the European Super League drama, Tottenham Hotspur parted ways with manager Jose Mourinho. 29 year old assistant coach Ryan Mason will act as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Their season, though, was effectively ended on Sunday when they lost the Carabao Cup final 1 – 0 to Manchester City.

Knocked out of all other competitions, and not looking like qualifying for Europe through the league, Tottenham Hotspur now face a long end to a season which, at one point, saw them top the table.

Nobody was surprised Jose Mourinho got sacked. Although the timing of it was surprising. The end of Mourinho’s Spurs tenure was inevitable. However, with the Carabao Cup to play, many assumed it would be at the end of the season.

Perhaps the Super League storm gave Daniel Levy the media cover he needed to make the decision when he did. The logic of firing Mourinho before a cup final is still baffling, though.

As Mourinho himself will tell anyone who listens, he wins trophies. That is why you hire him. That is why Tottenham hired him. Spurs had just enjoyed the best years in their history under Mauricio Pochettino and not won a trophy.

Mourinho got up to his usual toxic antics at Spurs, but he did get them to a cup final. He is no longer suitable for a top-level coaching role. However, in a one-off final, against even the might of City, Mourinho could do it.

The situation at Spurs must have been beyond dire if they fired the man who wins trophies just days before their chance to win their first trophy since 2008.

After losing the Carabao Cup final, Tottenham’s season fades into obscurity. Anyone could have told you that hiring Mourinho would backfire on them. That it has backfired on them quite so deliciously is a glimmer of hope in a Premier League landscape that further alienates fans by the day.
