Premier League Run-In Preview: Title, Europe, Relegation

We’ve had 28 games, a World Cup in between and now, the 2022/2023 Premier League enters the final stretch.

It’s been a good season because with ten games left, the fate of every team in the league has yet to be decided.

Can Arsenal hold on for a phenomenal Premier League title win over Manchester City? Which of the big teams can be non-disastrous enough to finish fourth? And which of the twelve candidates for relegation will go down?

We’ve debated, doubted, and philosophised over what a ‘title race’ really is. There can be no doubt anymore. With an eight point lead coming back from the international break, Arsenal are in the title race.

What’s more, they’re the front runners. What makes this so exciting and unpredictable is that this Arsenal team is different. They’ve led the league basically all season and shown remarkable resilience to maintain it. They’re not going to fall away or bottle it, so it’s up to Manchester City to be better than them.

When it comes to third and fourth place, it’s probably a battle royale between Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle and Manchester United. However, you can’t rule out an unlikely run from Brighton or Brentford who are both level with Liverpool on 42 points, eight behind Man Utd in third.

Liverpool and Tottenham are both veering between various forms of crisis, while Newcastle’s early season form has tailed off slightly. It may be a matter of who can most get their stuff together which decides Champions League qualification.

Towards the bottom of the table, just four points separate Southampton in last place and Crystal Palace in 12th. That’s 9 teams who could potentially be relegated. Palace have already blinked, sacking Patrick Viera to bring back Roy Hodgson.

Southampton are probably favourites to go down, due simply to how shambolic they’ve been this year. Apart from that, you can neither rely on nor discount any of the other teams.

Apart from Aston Villa, Chelsea and Fulham, every team has something to play for – some kind of jeopardy. It isn’t always like this in the Premier League, so put on your seatbelt and enjoy.
