Premier League Midweek Preview: Fine Margins

There’s no respite at this point of the season as the midweek round of fixtures brings massive implications all over the Premier League.

Teams fighting for the title, Europe and to avoid relegation are all in action as the Premier League approaches its climax.

It could be a significant couple of days in the relegation dogfight with Everton and Leeds both playing on Wednesday.

Leeds find themselves in trouble again following consecutive defeats to Manchester City and Leeds. As well as that, Luke Ayling’s red card on Sunday means he is suspended for the rest of the season. With a game against Chelsea on Tuesday, the schedule may be conspiring against Leeds at exactly the wrong time.

A win for Everton against already-relegated Watford coupled with a Chelsea win over Leeds would have the Toffees feeling immensely relieved ahead of the final two games of the season. If they could choose a team to face on Wednesday, it would be Watford which means the pressure is on Frank Lampard.

If Leeds pull off an unlikely win, Chelsea suddenly become vulnerable. Arsenal are just a point behind them in fourth, and have a chance to secure Champions League football with a win in Thursday’s North London Derby.

If they do and Chelsea lose, Chelsea will have to defend their European position after it looked like a formality for most of the year.

Undoubtedly the tie of the round is Tottenham VS Arsenal with Champions League football on the line. You couldn’t write it, but if you’re the Premier League you could definitely take advantage of the fact this game was postponed earlier in the season and reschedule it at the most dramatic time.

Regardless, that’s what lies ahead for Spurs and Arsenal in the North London Derby. Tottenham will fight to give themselves a chance in the final two games, while an Arsenal win will be a genuine milestone for Mikel Arteta’s team.

Manchester City travel to Wolves needing a win after Liverpool beat Aston Villa 2 – 1. It’s unlikely they will lose the title at this point, but injuries have been catching up with them as well. City don’t fold under pressure in the league, though, no matter how much Liverpool wish they did.
