Premier League Could Be Wiped Out by Covid-19

As the Premier League schedule becomes increasingly congested, it’s future will be in doubt if it is postponed.

With ever rising Covid-19 cases, the postponement or altogether stopping of the Premier League is a real possibility.

For the season to continue, the already hectic schedule must be played out. However, the virus is already causing disruption. Three of Aston Villa’s games have already been postponed. It’s anyone’s guess as to when they will be played.

On Wednesday, Fulham played against Tottenham Hotspur on only 48 hours notice. Some football has already been cancelled, with the women’s F.A Cup being scrapped until the situation improves.

When last season shut down in March, the biggest clubs made a cynical power grab. Both Liverpool and Manchester United were reported to have held talks about a European Premier League. Such a venture is publicly backed by FIFA.

It would uproot football as we know it. As English domestic football becomes increasingly capitalist, expect the richest organisations to get their way eventually.

If the league is stopped again, expect the European Super League to rear its head once more.

Wolves manager Nuno Espírito Santo says that in such an eventuality, some clubs would not survive.

“If we stop everything will change. A new football will come, probably with a Super League, probably with other competitions. It’ll be a matter of which clubs will survive. It’s a tough decision to make.”

“I don’t know what is better. What I’m afraid of is, if the decision is to stop, football we know now will not be the same. This is my biggest fear. The schedule will go crazy and it’ll be impossible to finish the league and think about the Euros.”
