Fulham Escape North London With Hard-Fought Point

Despite being blindsided by the scheduling of the game, Fulham earned a battling 1 – 1 draw at Spurs Wednesday night.

The fixture, initially scheduled for 17 days ago, was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak at Fulham. The Premier League notified both teams on Monday morning that they game would be played on Wednesday night.

Harry Kane put the home side ahead with a header in the first half. Ivan Cavaleiro equalized on 74 minutes and the Cottagers held out for a point.

Fulham manager Scott Parker described the decision to play the game on 48 hours notice as “scandalous”.

“There were two players on that pitch that had trained one day, come back from Covid and had one day’s training. Players had three or four days training.

“The issue was never about only having two days to prepare for it. I understand that. The issue was 16 days ago this game was scheduled in, since then 10 positive cases of Covid, staff as well, and then 9.30am on Monday we got told that we were playing in the game.

“People need to understand the predicament we were in. We are not making it up. We have been very open and had worries for the safety of others too.

Oddly, the short notice probably worked to their advantage. In the championship last year, Fulham often had only two days preparation time before games. Scott Parker is used to that, while Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is not.

“I thought we were immense tonight, I thought we were superb with what we faced, with a lot of speculation and talk from outside and no one really knows the full extent. I was very proud because of what we faced.”

Spurs, who were tipped for the title some weeks ago, have now only won one game in their last six. For Fulham, it’s a sign of improving fortunes after a wretched start to the season.
