Odds But Not History Favour Arsenal at Old Trafford

Manchester United host Arsenal at Old Trafford in the game of the round on Monday Night Football tonight.

Previously a heavyweight clash, United against Arsenal is now a tie between two teams vying for Champions League qualification.

Both teams have significant problems, which makes this game a tough one to predict. In short, both teams are so unreliable that you wouldn’t trust either of them to win.

At 2/1, the bookies think Arsenal are more likely to win than Manchester United. Given that UTD have only won four of their last fifteen games, it’s easy to see why.

However, Arsenal are not that much better. While their record is superior, their performances haven’t been.

Since Unai Emery took over last season, the gunners have often got results despite their performances. It’s been enough to keep their heads above the water, but not enough to instill confidence.

As a result, you never know which Arsenal will turn up in a game. Their last two games against Watford and Aston Villa were hectic games which they should have made easier work of.

As well as that, the Gunners have a terrible record at Old Trafford. They haven’t won there in the league since 2006 despite having many chances to do so.

The Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho and Solskjaer iterations of Manchester United have all been shadows of the Ferguson sides. Since Ferguson left, Arsenal have gone to Old Trafford with the objectively better team and still not won.

What this means is that a draw is the most likely result. A draw against your direct rival is not a bad result in the Premier League. However, given the ultra-competitive landscape this season, neither team can risk losing too much ground.

If there is a winner, it will be the team who are more willing to go for it.
