Manchester City One Game Away From Treble

Manchester City won the F.A Cup on Saturday thanks to a 2-1 win over local rivals Manchester United.

It was their second trophy of the season after they secured the Premier League with two games remaining.

After the Wembley showpiece, manager Pep Guardiola declared ‘now we can talk about the treble’.

If Manchester City are going to complete an historic treble, they appear to be rather strolling towards it.

Manchester City took the lead on Saturday thanks to Ilkay Gundogan, who has saved his tally of wonderful goals over a season for the point at which they will win his team trophies.

His left footed volley after 13 seconds was the fastest F.A Cup final goal in history. While the game was closer than the early goal would suggest, it did underline the inevitability of Manchester City.

Their final game of the season is Saturday’s Champions League final against Inter Milan in Istanbul. They are heavy favourites to win the Champions League and complete the treble.

The only thing stopping them could be another bout of Pep Guardiola’s over-thinking. He prizes the Champions League way too much, and is already putting the pressure on.

“Everybody knows it. We have done incredible seasons – five Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, Carabao Cups, but we have to win the Champions League to be recognised like the team deserves to be recognised,” he said.

“We have to admit it, without the Champions League – it has been amazing, it has been fun – but we are missing (something). We have to do it.”

Guardiola has done incredible work to reach this point, but he is his own worst enemy. City’s lineup against Inter Milan will be telling. If it’s their usual lineup, they’ll probably win. If it isn’t, then we’ll know the pressure has got to him.
