Liverpool Punish Spurs For Missed Chances In Heavyweight Clash

Tim Sherwood wasn’t the only one suckerpunched by Roberto Firmino’s late header on Thursday night.

A moment that will go down in commentary folklore, the Amazon pundit predicted Liverpool wouldn’t score from their last-minute corner.

Just as he finished speaking, Roberto Firmino powered a header into the top corner to seal a 2-1 Liverpool win.

Sherwood must deal with the embarrassment, but Tottenham have to stomach defeat in a game they probably should have won.

The top-of-the-table clash was anticipated to be a patented, drab, Jose Mourinho masterclass 0-0. It turned out to be a worthy contest between two of the best teams in the country.

Both sides played to their strengths. Liverpool imposed their suffocating dominance on the game, while Spurs stood firm and organised, ready to counterattack.

This was reflected in the number of shots – 17 (11 on target) for Liverpool and 8 (2 on target) for Tottenham. Despite this, Spurs will feel that they missed an opportunity at Anfield. Liverpool’s shots were mostly from outside the box. Jose Mourinho’s side created the better chances, and should have been two or three goals up before Firmino’s winner.

Mohammed Salah opened the scoring on 26 minutes with a deflected shot which looped over Hugo Lloris. Spurs responded seven minutes later with a deadly counter attack and an unerring finish from Son. 1 – 1.

Spurs winger Steven Bergwjin missed two glorious chances in the inside left channel. For the first, Trent Alexander-Arnold put just enough pressure on to cause him to put the ball wide. For the second, he watched the ball smack agonisingly back off the post.

Then, from a corner Harry Kane headed into the ground and over the bar. It was a free header and a chance he would normally bury. After the game, Jose Mourinho said his side deserved to win. On the balance of chances created, he’s right. However it’s Liverpool who got the win, and in doing so moved three points clear at the top of the table.
