Harry Kane – Where Next For England Captain?

News broke on Tuesday lunchtime that striker Harry Kane has informed Tottenham Hotspur he would like to leave the club.

After the failed marriage with Jose Mourinho, Tottenham are looking at a few years of rebuilding. Harry Kane will be 28 next season. His decision to leave his boyhood club is surely down to his ambition to win trophies.

With that in mind, as well as his caliber, there are a limited number of teams for Harry Kane to move to. Any team would love to have him, but which would be the best move?

Kane has been linked with Manchester United over the years, and the consensus is that would be a good fit. However, Kane doesn’t guarantee that United would be transformed into a contender for every trophy. Considering it would take a fee of around £120 million, he would have to be their main summer signing.

If he wants to win trophies, Manchester City is the obvious choice for Kane. He could certainly flourish there. However, the question is, would Pep Guardiola want him? City have won the league and reached the Champions League final playing the whole season without a recognized number nine. Kane’s all round game is exceptional, but is it good enough for Guardiola to wean himself off his midfielder fetish?

Chelsea is the most logical choice in the Premier League. If they can acquire a top-class center forward, they would be City’s strongest competitors next season. Kane is a ready-made solution to fill that gap in their team. However, Daniel Levy will be loath to sell his talisman to a London rival.

There are other options in Europe – Madrid, Barcelona, perhaps Bayern Munich. However, after the pandemic, no European clubs have that kind of money to throw around. The Spanish giants could probably finance the move somehow, but they are basket cases at the moment. Neither of them are necessarily a good move for the England captain.

Kane seems determined to leave though, stating that he wants his future resolved before the Euros. He might not get his wish. A transfer of this magnitude takes a long time, and he may end up playing for Spurs next season and leaving the summer after.
