Emile Heskey: People Didn’t Rate Me, But Managers Picked Me

Former England and Liverpool forward Emile Heskey said that he never cared what people thought of him.

For Emile Heskey, being a footballer was all about the team and what he achieved.

Despite scoring over 100 Premier League goals, Emile Heskey is not remembered as a great goalscorer.

He was the archetypal target man, holding the ball up and bringing others in the play. As well as that, he played on the wing when he was asked to.

With a new book coming out, his legacy must have been on his mind of late. The fact that he was not a prolific goalscorer meant that he was the butt of many jokes over the years.

However, Heskey says that he never cared about whether he scored or whether he didn’t.

Speaking to Luke Moore of the Football Ramble Daily, he said he didn’t even think of himself as a goalscorer.

“I didn’t mind. It was a case of I always looked at team first and I’ve done that from a young age. So yes, you want to score goals.

“I know players that if we’ve won four or five nil, and they haven’t scored, they’re fuming. Why? We’ve won.

“It’s personal. It’s selfishness, but again strikers are selfish.

“I am what I achieved. Does it matter when you’ve got the medal?

“If a striker takes a shot rather than scoring, it’s about making the right decision. If he scores the chance everything’s fine but if he misses the chance, then what?”

“I work for the team, that’s what it’s all about. Put 11 players in who only think about themselves, see how far you get.

“I think when you look at teams like Atletico Madrid. They weren’t fancied at the time but Diego Simeone put together a team that worked hard for each other. Then you have a few individuals who give you that something extra, and it worked really well.

“I wouldn’t call myself a goal scorer. People didn’t rate me, but managers picked me.”
