Brighton Is Exactly The Right Place For Graham Potter

Brighton manager Graham Potter could be an unexpected beneficiary of Antonio Conte’s potential appointment as manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

When Tottenham sacked Nuno Espirito Santo, Graham Potter was one of the names mooted as a replacement. It’s no surprise. What he has done at Brighton will have him in the frame for a number of jobs over the next few years.

However, Graham Potter’s managerial career would be best served by staying put at Brighton. There, he can develop as a manager and tactician with no actual pressure to succeed. He can only overachieve at Brighton.

If he were to go to Spurs now, he would join a team on its knees. Neither Mourinho or Santo worked out for them, and a rebuild is needed.

As well as that, he would inherit the situation regarding Harry Kane and his desire to leave. Kane has only scored one goal this season after flirting with Manchester City all summer.

He would either oversee Kane’s departure, or his decline. A manager like Antonio Conte has the gravitas and authority to go into Spurs and get results. Graham Potter doesn’t yet.

There is a bigger picture for Potter, though. He is regarded as having one of the better styles of play in the Premier League. If he continues his trajectory for another couple of years, he could get a massive job.

Neither Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola will be at Liverpool or Manchester City forever. Both of those positions are going to become vacant in the coming years, leaving a physical and philosophical gap.

Potter could be exactly the right manager to fill that gap when the time comes. For now, he should take Brighton as far as he can.
