Brendan Rodgers Wants Carabao Cup Success

Increasingly, Brendan Rodgers’ time away from the Premier League looks like a stroke of genius.

Something of a joke figure when he left Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers took another prestigious job, albeit in an unfashionable league with Celtic. He was parachuted into Leicester last season and quickly re-solidified his credentials as one of the best coaches in England.

This season, Brendan Rodgers has the chance to finish in the top four with an exciting Leicester team. As well as that, he has a genuine chance of bringing some silverware to Leicester with the Carabao Cup.

Although he is the man of the moment, there is something about Rodgers that has flown under the radar. He is really good in cup competitions.

With Liverpool, Celtic and now Leicester, Rodgers has qualified from his last 30 cup games. The last time he lost a cup game was to Aston Villa in 2015.

Fittingly, it is Aston Villa who stand against Leicester in the Carabao Cup semifinals, the first leg of which takes place on Wednesday night.

Leicester last won the League Cup in 2001, when they defeated Tranmere 2 – 1. Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to add to the club’s shock 2016 Premier League title win.

“I’m aware the club hasn’t been to a final for 20 years so let’s get there then,” he said.

“Let’s not be worried too much about the past. Let’s create this new history but we know we’re going to have to play well to get there.”

“It’s always nice when you have something tangible to show for your progress.

“The players have been amazing so if you can do that it would be great. You can still do some great work as a team and as a club and not win but our ambition is to win.

“Any team that wins anything you have to move onto the next focus and target.”
