U.S pro Sam Soverel won the inaugural British Poker Open Championship, held at Aspers Casino in London.
In doing so, Sam Soverel moved himself up to 69th on the all-time money list. His $11.4 million career earnings so far isn’t bad for someone who won their first tournament in 2011.
Sam Soverel (30), is a somewhat controversial and polarizing figure in the world of poker. His murky online poker history is one barrier to him being truly celebrated.
As well as that, his indifference towards the pomp of poker tournaments is irksome for his fellow professionals.

The more prickly elements of his character came across when he spoke to the Poker Central Podcast about his win.
While he may not care for trophies, he does care about getting one over on his competitors. In fact, Soverel was happier about the fact that no one else got the British Open trophy than he was about the fact that he won it.
“It was a great series for me,” said Soverel.
Man, I feel like I ran really good leading up to the final tables in pretty much every tournament including the ones I didn’t cash. I didn’t go all the way in all of them but I really really good, and it was a fun series for someone who plays high stakes.
“I’m not really a trophy guy but because everyone else wanted it so much, and I got to keep it, it was pretty sweet winning it!”

On a great personal achievement, and his growing reputation, Soverel was again contrary.
“I don’t really care if other high stakes players think I’m a good player. In fact I prefer it if they think I’m terrible.
“It’s good to go up against the best players, but a few of the players that I really want to show up aren’t here. It’s a little boring.”
