Brazil progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup thanks to a 2 – 0 win over Serbia on Wednesday.
Although fans hoping to see a vibrant Brazil were disappointed, the match showed an improvement and steadiness from Brazil. This management of the group stages will bode well for them as they progress into the round of 16.
In 2014, Brazil scored 7 goals in two group stage games, including a 0 – 0 draw with Mexico. They played the samba football that everybody loves, and Neymar was lighting up the tournament.
However, this ultimately lead to a 7 – 1 semifinal humiliation against the eventual winners, Germany.
As teams like Italy, Germany and Spain have shown before, gradually growing into the tournament is a much better strategy.

With this in mind, Brazil are looking good. Following a 1 – 1 draw with Switzerland, they defeated Costa Rica 2 – 0.
Repeating this scoreline against the more difficult Serbia team shows a good mentality that was lacking in 2014.
There is still more to come from this Brazil side in Russia, too. Coutinho has played well, but apart from that, the team hasn’t reached its potential.
As well as that, Neymar has yet to explode. Bar his one goal against Costa Rica, his tournament has been defined by petulance and playacting. If Brazil are to progress further in the knockout rounds, Neymar will have to step up.
Brazil are currently the favourites with Paddy Power to win the World Cup. They come in at 7/2, just ahead of Spain at 4/1.

Neymar is currently the 5th favourite to win the Golden Boot, at 25/1. He’s been eclipsed by other strikers so far at this World Cup, but don’t bet against him to come alive.
