Transfer Market Roundup: New-Look Midfields Galore

With preseason fast approaching, the dominos have begun to fall in the transfer market and midfield has been a priority.

Mason Mount is officially a Manchester United player following his £55 million transfer. He is one of this Summer’s many Chelsea refugees, and will likely thrive in a more functional team. Mount is projected to play in midfield ahead of Casimero and Bruno Fernandes.

He’s a creative player, and brings plenty of pressing work-rate and final third ball recoveries, which Erik ten Hag loves.

Across Manchester, fellow Stamford Bridge escapee Mateo Kovacic has found a home at Pep Guardiola’s City. He is ostensibly a replacement for Ilkay Gundogan. While he may be unable to replicate Gundogan’s importance, or even start as many games, he does share the German’s ability to produce a moment of magic.

For around £30 million, this is a solid pickup for City.

The Liverpool rebuild that should have happened a year ago is now underway. Jurgen Klopp is addressing his aged midfield with the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai to join Alexis Mac Allister. At 22 and 24, they’ll bring energy to a side that has lost its way somewhat. Both players are technically sound, with enough creativity to support Liverpool’s talented attackers.

Newcastle have announced their first major recruit of the summer with the signing of Sandro Tonali from A.C Milan. The 23-year-old is one of the most highly-rated central midfielders in the game, and will change how Newcaslte play.

The Magpies have been using Bruno Guimares as their hub while surrounding him with athletes like Joelinton and Joe Willock. Tonali will bring some extra finesse, while still being able to get from box to box.

Arsenal are by far the early winners of the transfer market, having secured their top three targets by early July. Declan Rice will play in central midfield, while Kai Havertz is a more creative upgrade on Granit Xhaka. Ajax defender Jurrien Timber will also join soon, and he is projected to play an inverted fullback role on the right hand side.

There could be more massive moves on the way. Chelsea are linked with Brighton’s £100 million midfielder Moises Caicedo, while the PSG future of Kylian Mbappe is in doubt.
