New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is getting settled into his role and is already making some concerning noises.
The clueless American owner trope is rather played out, but appears to be true in the case of Todd Boehly.
He’s already proposed scrapping transfer fees in favour of American-style trades. As well as that, he’s reportedly trying to sign Cristiano Ronaldo for Chelsea.

Roman Abramovic was not Chelsea manager, but he was the figurehead of the club. Losing him is akin to the losses of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger for Arsenal and Manchester United.
Chelsea will undoubtedly struggle during the transition. Petr Cech has recently left the club, and director Marina Granovskaia is only staying until the end of the summer transfer window.
After that, anything can happen. A new owner in Todd Boehly attempting to make waves is the last thing Chelsea needs. The suggestion that he’s going to completely overhaul European football is naive, to say the least.
The idea of implementing trades fails to consider the fact that football is a multinational game. It consists of as many different jurisdictions as there are countries. As well as that, when a player joins a new club, he signs a new contract. Unlike American sports where the contract moves with the player.

Boehly’s naivety is to be expected, considering how quickly the sale of the club had to go through. Traditionally, the acquisition of a football club would be years in the making.
Now, he’s learning on the job and it will be a steep learning curve. The problem is, at such a pivotal moment in the history of the club, Chelsea could easily fall from that height.
