Thomas Tuchel Getting The Best Out of Chelsea

Say it quietly, but Chelsea, revitalized under Thomas Tuchel, might be a good bet to win the Champions League this year.

With Manchester City dominating domestically, all the talk is about whether they can win the quadruple. As well as that, their recent collapses in the Champions League means all eyes will be on them. Can they finally win it?

Then there’s Liverpool, whose season now rests on Champions League success. Nobody is talking about Chelsea winning it, and that will suit them just fine.

Having just eliminated Atletico Madrid, Chelsea will believe they have what it takes.

Chelsea aren’t exciting under Thomas Tuchel, but they are effective. His more defensive style is a sensible antidote for the football that lost Frank Lampard his job.

They are no longer the team who will win games 4 – 3 but finish the season empty handed. Under Tuchel, they focus on making the opponent have a bad day. This way, a 0 – 0 draw is the worst case scenario.

Tuchel, after all, took PSG to the final last year. He has shifted Chelsea to a 3 at the back team, and this is getting him results.

Lets not forget, Chelsea brought the 3 at the back system to England under Conte. They ran away with the league that season. Years on, their squad is still suited to that style of play.

Marcos Alonso never played in Lampard’s team. However, with a back three, he’s showing what a good wingback he is. One of the best.

Ngolo Kante, too, can focus on what he is best at: breaking up play. Both Sarri and Lampard tried to give him work higher up the pitch. But this is the guy who won a Premier League with Leicester, then with Chelsea and then won a World Cup as a defensive midfielder. You can win with Kante at his best.

This Chelsea team will fancy themselves against anyone in Europe now. With no scrutiny on them domestically either, they could quietly, efficiently win it all.
