Newcastle United Are Still A Basket Case

When Newcastle United were taken over by their new abhorrently rich owners, it caused quite a stir among football fans.

For Newcastle United supporters, there was jubilation and for the first time in eons, optimism. For everyone else, dread. Dread that another behemoth in the mould of Manchester City was about to come and steal everybody’s lunch money.

While that will inevitably happen at some point, the meantime is more complicated for a club stuck in a perpetual cycle of failure. The Mike Ashley years will take some recovering from for Newcastle United.

Newcaslte are currently embroiled in a relegation fight and right now it looks unlikely they will stay up. As well as that, they just crashed out of the F.A cup in humiliating fashion to League One Cambridge United.

England international right back Kieran Trippier is the first signing of the new era. While he may well prove to be an astute acquisition, Newcastle will need a lot more than that.

Herein lies the problem. The position Newcastle are in almost makes their money irrelevant for this season. What kind of players do you buy? How do you convince players to come to Newcaslte? What vision do you sell them?

They cannot sign any superstars when there is no guarantee they will be a Premier League team next season. So, do they sign mid to lower Premier League players. Can you convince a player to move their life when they won’t be in the team once Newcastle eventually do start signing superstars?

With manager Eddie Howe seemingly the only person in the organisation with football experience, the remaining three weeks of the transfer window are vital for Newcastle’s medium-term future.

While the new regime untangles the old one, Toon Army fans have little choice but to keep the faith in the meantime.
