On Wednesday night, the bookies started paying out on bets that Rafa Benitez would be fired as Everton manager.
It comes on the back of a terrible run culminating in a dismal 4-1 defeat in the Merseyside derby. The bookies may have been wrong to do so, and it looks like Rafa Benitez is safe for now.
Everton owner Farhad Moshiri told TalkSport Wednesday night that Benitez needs more time. He’s right, too.
A 4-1 defeat to Liverpool is painful, particularly for Everton at Goodison Park no less. However, it is no reason to throw everything away and start again.

Just look at some of Liverpool’s recent results. 5-0 against Watford. 5-0 against Manchester United, a result from which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stint as UTD manager never recovered.
4 – 0 against Arsenal and 4 – 0 again against Southampton. That list doesn’t even include the litany of 3 – 0’s Liverpool have amassed this season.
They are averaging 3 goals a game this year. If they keep that up they will win the Premier League. The only reason their pummeling of Arsenal didn’t send gunners fans into an existential crisis is because half their team is still young and novel.
The point is, there is no shame in a thrashing against Liverpool. They will dismantle the best and the worst, the teams flying high as well as the ones who are down in the dumps. It is not a measuring stick or indictment of where the victim team stands.

Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world and in Mo Salah, they have probably the best player in the world at the moment. Rafa Benitez losing his job after losing to Liverpool is a tempting narrative but in truth, it’s the least of his worries.
