Kieran Trippier Set to Sign for Atletico Madrid

England international right back Kieran Trippier is on the verge of leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid.

According to reports, Atletico Madrid have agreed a fee with Tottenham for Kieran Trippier.

Kieran Trippier has big shoes to fill in the Spanish capital. Atletico’s experienced right back, Juanfran, let his contract expire and left the club at the end of the season.

Trippier spent four years at Spurs, having joined from Burnley in 2015, and was initially backup to Kyle Walker.

When Walker moved to Manchester City, Trippier came into his own for club and country. He even played right back ahead of Walker at the World Cup, with Gareth Southgate opting to utilize Walker as the right-sided center back in a back three with Trippier as the right wing back.

It was his World Cup performances for England that solidified Trippier as one of the premium right backs in football. However, there was a price to pay for that.

Just like Harry Kane, Trippier’s form fell off a cliff in 2018/2019. The demands of playing a World Cup in between two physically intense Mauricio Pochettino seasons clearly caught up with him.

It will though, be ideal preparation for his new club, Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s men have been the standard bearers for hard working teams long before Spurs were a pressing club.

Perhaps it is no longer surprising to see an English player sign for a European club. However it is surprising to see a player of Trippier’s age move away from England.

At 28, he is not a young prospect moving to get some playing time and put himself in the shop window. He is giving the prime years of his career to Atletico and as a result, his career will be defined by the move.
