Gianluca Scamacca (23), enjoyed something of a breakout season last year. He scored 16 goals for Sassuolo and established himself as Italy’s starting striker.

“It is rumoured throughout the industry that Arsenal made a £25million offer to Sassuolo for Scamacca in the last couple of days.

“The club’s general manager also said that it is very likely the striker will leave to play in the Premier League. Sassuolo has rejected Arsenal’s opening offer though.

“The fee needed, I believe, will be about £50m. Sassuolo has already pushed back offers from clubs in the Premier League – Arsenal, of course, and Newcastle United.

“The Magpies wanted him back in January – it was a really, really good offer, but the player, understandably, did not want to risk joining a club who were facing the possibility of being relegated.”

The striker position is Arsenal’s priority this summer following the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang and Alexandre Lacazette. The pair cost the club £50 million each in 2018, as well as around £200,000 a week each in wages.

Both performed well for the club, but their places in the squad prohibited Arsenal from building an elite attack. Now they have Saka, Smith-Rowe and Martinelli on the cusp of ascending to stardom. Arsenal need one or two smart additions to compliment those options and construct a fluid attack capable of scoring goals throughout the season.

If they make the right moves, they will be a match for anyone next season.
