Switzerland VS Italy
Italy are the reigning champions, although there was a failed world cup qualification campaign since the last Euros. They fall squarely into the ‘good team not playing well yet’ category. Switzerland are just a good team, and have been for a while. Now though, they have genuine league-winning talent in their ranks with Xhaka and Akanji. It will take a good performance from a good team to beat them.
Germany VS Denmark
Nobody is sure if Germany are good and we won’t decide until they’re either knocked out or win the final. We can say with some surety that they have a better team than their Euro 2024 round of 16 opponents, Denmark. All going well, the hosts should book a place in the quarter final.
England VS Slovakia
Slovakia are tough opponents, but opponents England should beat if they play well. The problem is, we’re starting to lose track of what this looks like. The criticism of the manager and team is, as always, overblown. However, there is no denying that a team full of the best players of the world is producing flat performances. Slovakia won’t roll over, so England need to play well if they’re to progress and take advantage of their placement in the draw.
Spain VS Georgia
Georgia have done incredibly well to qualify for the knockout rounds. Unfortunately, their tournament will probably be ended by Spain, who have looked good. This Spanish side is more winger focused than the possession teams we’ve seen in the past. The only issue is they are young in wide areas, and could come unstuck later on.
