England Advance To Quarterfinals With Historic Germany Win

Thomas Muller bore down on the England goal for what seemed like an eternity. It’s a goal we’ve seen a thousand times before.

It’s a goal Thomas Muller has scored a thousand times before, too. Clean through on goal in a central position on the edge of the box. Only pickford to beat. Bread and butter for a striker. A striker who’s scored against the English so many times.

It’s still hard to believe his shot didn’t nestle in the bottom corner. As the ball dragged wide, Wembley, the nation, held its breath. Raheem Sterling, who gave the ball away, fell to his knees. In that moment, England started believing.

England beat Germany in an international tournament for the first time in history with a 2 – 0 win at Wembley. Bukayo Saka started on the right of an attack with Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

The rest of the team was conservative with Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips anchoring the midfield.

It worked. Germany’s attack was nullified in a forgettable first half although England also struggled to get going. Harry Kane in particular huffed and puffed and couldn’t get into the game.

The deadlock was broken on 75 minutes by the outstanding Raheem Sterling. Sterling started the move, driving infield from the right wing. He laid the ball off to Kane, who found Grealish, who found Luke Shaw on the left.

Shaw’s cutback was met by Sterling to put England a goal ahead. After the Muller scare, Harry Kane finally scored a Euro 2020 goal on 86 minutes.

Kane’s header from a Grealish cross sealed the result and a momentous day in English football history.

Gareth Southgate’s team now face a favourable route to the final. They play Ukraine in the quarter finals and one of Denmark or the Czech Republic will be in the semis.
