When Arsenal travel to Anfield on Saturday, they have the chance to go above Liverpool in the table with a win.
What looked like a low-stakes game a few months ago suddenly carries weight thanks to Arsenal’s recent good form.
Their recent run has fans dreaming that a challenge for the fourth position in the table is a realistic aim.
Liverpool will be a litmus test of Arsenal’s progress this season. They are a different prospect altogether than the teams they’ve played on their good run.

While only two points separate them in the table, the goals column belies the true difference. Arsenal have scored 13 goals this season, while Liverpool have scored 31. Although their defensive record is similar, it would be an accomplishment for Arsenal to keep Liverpool at bay.
A loss away at Anfield would be the expected result and there’s no shame in that. However, should they lose, the manner of the defeat and the reaction to it will be crucial for the Gunners.
If they suffer another mauling, it will reopen wounds so hesitantly stitched within Arsenal’s fanbase. Arsenal fans could stomach a defeat if they at least make it a game.
As well as that, Mikel Arteta’s men can’t afford to let a defeat precipitate more indifferent form. They’re a young side gathering momentum. A confidence-sapping defeat could prove detrimental to their chances of qualifying for Europe, particularly with so much competition around them.
