The Premier League is back, and it’s high time to weave some way-too-early narratives from matchweek 1.
The beginning of this Premier League season sees many teams in flux, particularly at the top of the table. Whoever can put together their best form the fastest will have an advantage for the rest of the season.
Below we take a look at the winners and losers of the first round of Premier League action for 2023-2024.

Winners – Newcastle
Newcastle were the most eye-catching team of the first round of games with a 5 – 1 thrashing of Aston Villa. There are mitigating circumstances, particularly when it comes to Aston Villa and the injuries in their squad. However, Newcastle looked ominous with Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes scoring on their debuts.
Losers – Tottenham
Tottenham weren’t terrible in their 2 – 2 draw with Brentford. However, there is a cloud of uncertainty surrounding the club. Before the game, Harry Kane completed his move to Bayern Munich. So far, there is no replacement for the talismanic striker. With unproven manager Ange Postecoglou at the helm at this time, nobody knows if Spurs will be any good this year.

Winners – Brighton
Brighton slipped comfortably back into their role as exciting, offensive underdogs on Saturday. Their 4 – 1 win over Luton showcased everything we’ve grown to love about them. Yes, it was the first game of the season. Yes, it was Luton and yes, playing in Europe may negatively affect their domestic campaign. For now, though, Roberto DeZerbi’s team looks exciting.
Losers – Chelsea And Liverpool
Chelsea and Liverpool played out a 1 – 1 draw in which neither side looked like they were going to trouble the top three positions in the table. Both sides are going through major rebuilds, which look like they have potential. However, with Jurgen Klopp fielding Kody Gakpo in midfield, these were clearly two incomplete teams. Both clubs may need some time to show us their true faces.
