Halfway through a transitional season Graham Potter is, statistically, the worst manager Chelsea have had in the Premier League era.
Chelsea’s 1 – 0 loss to bottom-of-the-league Southampton means Graham Potter has won twice in 14 games.
They have failed to score in six of 10 matches in 2023 and are 10th in the table. His win percentage is just 29.4%.
Under Todd Boehly, Chelsea are essentially becoming an entirely new club. Some tumult was expected, but this is probably worse than they feared.

Graham Potter will be acutely aware of the difference between Chelsea and Brighton. He’s been criticised by Chelsea fans for his constant tactical tinkering. This is nothing new, he did that at Brighton all the time.
It was okay to lose a few games in order to figure things out when you manage Brighton. They’re trendy, they’re underdogs, look at the football they’re playing.
In any other year but this one, Potter would have been sacked by Chelsea. It makes analyses of this situation difficult because it’s hard to see Chelsea as a project team.
Todd Boehly certainly seems to back Potter, but how much longer will the fans accept this? They are used to ruthlessness, not backing a manager through a tough period.
‘When results aren’t going well, this is the world we are in,’ Potter said. ‘There’s a transition and there are factors and emotion but at the same time the team is losing and we have had the results we have, so you can also understand.’

‘I’m not stupid, I’m not naive. My job is to keep going, to help the team, to support them through a tough period and take the criticism.’
‘I think you can only be yourself and try your best to be yourself,’ he said. ‘I get it. When you are losing there is always something you should do or should change. I’ve always been that way. It has got me to this point, but, at the same time, people want something different.’
