Euro 2020 – Scotland Crash Out, England and Wales Advance

Manager Steve Clarke promised Scotland will be back at international tournaments after crashing out of Euro 2020 on Tuesday.

Scotland were defeated 3 – 1 by Croatia at Hampden Park in their final Group D fixture of Euro 2020. As a result, Scotland finish bottom of the group with 1 goal and 1 point.

Euro 2020 was Scotland’s first major tournament in 23 years. With a win against Croatia, they could have become the greatest Scotland team in history.

There was hope when Callum McGregor’s 42nd minute strike brought the game to 1 – 1. However, a Luka Modric rocket followed by an Ivan Perisic set piece header brought their tournament to an end.

“It is just disappointing that we are out,” said Steve Clarke.

“We wanted to stay in the tournament as long as we could. Disappointed that we haven’t managed to get out of the group stage.

“You have to give me tonight to get over that and in a few days we will sit down, we will take stock.

“I will look at my performance and the players’ performances and we will look at what we can do better in the future and we will make sure it is not 23 years before we go to the next tournament.”

Steve Clarke will rue a hard fought 0 – 0 draw with England in the second game of their group. If they had snuck a win, they could be in the next round now.

As it is, England go through top of the group. They join Wales, Denmark, Italy, Austria, Holland, Belgium and Croatia. The rest of the matchups will be determined today after Sweden play Poland, Spain play Slovakia, Portugal play France and Germany play Hungary.
